The Project • 3 Weeks (Jan ‘15), 3 credits • 8-15 students + project leader & assistant • Course is tailored to your area of focus • 2 weeks volunteering at Bus4Africa in Makunduchi and Stone Town, Zanzibar. • 1 week Visiting local companies and learning about the local business culture (Coca-Cola bottling plant, container shipping, Spice farms, red algae cultivation, and tourist trade)
VOLUNTEER WORK • Collaborating with experienced humanitarian NGO, Bus4Africa: • Working with children teaching English and other school subjects • Teaching computer literacy to adults. • After school classes, movie/game nights. (few people have access to TV’s) • Running sports programs and swimming classes. • Helping out at local radio station. • Women Empowerment Project • Entrepreneurship and improving employability.
Assessment • 3 parts (pass-fail course): • 50% - 2500 word written assignment • 25% - Daily blog • 25% - Participation 90% - A 80% - B 70% - C 60% - D (fail)
TOPICS of research • ECONOMICS • A fragile economy in a globalised world: • Reliance on tourism • Failure to compete in global spice market • Infrastructural problems (post-Tanzanian unification) • CULTURE • Business culture, music, cuisine • SOCIETY • Education, religion (Islam), ethnic groups, Arabian and colonial past. • POLITICS • Socialism, Multi-party violence, democratic stability
PRELIMINARY SEMESTER • Technical training: • Learning how to teach • Understanding humanitarian work • Cultural training: • Zanzibari history, politics, religion, food, art, music, people etc. Classes will begin once the final participantshave been chosen and the flights are booked!
EXPENSES Total does not include “fun money” or money for travel once the project is completed.
