  9. COST vs. BENEFIT ANALYSIS One time implementation costs: $220,000, including, consultant, materials, training, travel, and ISO program specific labor costs over a two year period. On-going (annual) cost savings: $2,162,000: -$2,000,000 Heavy equipment rate savings by shutting off equipment during breaks and morning maintenance period. - $80,000 diesel cost savings by shutting down heavy equipment during breaks and lunch periods. $47,000 Plant protector/container reuse. $29,000 water cost differential for using reclaimed water in place of potable water. $ 6,000 water meter charge savings (Meter downsized from 6” to 4”)

  14. The City of San Diego’s Solid Waste Collection System • 8,100 miles of streets traveled • 315,000 single family and small business customers • 16 million stops per year • 380,000 tons of refuse collected

  15. TRAVEL DISTANCE: Refuse Collection Routes With such a large geographical area to cover in the collection system, one of the priorities in reducing air emissions was to find a way to reduce miles traveled.

  16. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) • Reduces mileage by 20% with the incorporation of RouteSmart software. • Partially activated, and has already saved: • 23,000 miles/year • 11,500 gallons of fuel • 129 tons of CO2

  18. Project Impacts • Save taxpayer money: Up to $600,000 in General Fund in first year. • Reduce air pollution: Smaller fleet, reduced miles, “Zone” management.
