Steps While a Doctoral Student • Form Academic Supervisory Committee • By the end of your second semester • See Idella to file online • At least 4 members, • Chair and one other member from department • One member from outside the discipline • Committee may be changed
Academic Supervisory Committee • Inform student of regulations • Review and approve program of study • Evaluate student annually • Conduct Qualifying Examination
Program Plan • Written by Student and Advisor • In consultation with Sup. Comm members • Meeting Dept and Grad School Requirements • Grad Coordinator will review
Requirements • 90 credit hours beyond BA • 15 credits within dept • 15 credits outside of dept • 3 to 5 credits supervised teaching • 1 credit Proseminar • 15 credits of “TOOL” courses • 12 credits Dissertation Research
More specifically, COURSES WITHIN DEPT: • exclude dissertation credits • no more than 9 hours of independent study • no more than 5 hours of supervised research ** May petition grad committee if an insufficient # of appropriate within dept courses are available.
More Specifically, TOOLS include: MINIMALLY: • 6 credits of statistics • 5 credits of research design/grantwriting • 3 credits of supervised research
Research Rotations • Required for Ph.D. students after Fall 2006 • Minimum of two rotations • Semester long, for course credit • Upon advisement of Mentor & Supervisory Committee • Completed prior to Qualifying Exams • With Faculty Who • Have Graduate Faculty status • Are willing to supervise • At least one rotation must be completed with a member (other than their mentor) of the student’s supervisory committee.
Qualifying Examination • May be as early as 3rd semester post-BA • You must be registered in semester of Qauls • can use SPA 7979 Advanced Research • Both Written and Oral • All members present for the Oral • May retake Quals at least 1 semester later
May I Introduce the Candidate… • Form Dissertation Supervisory Committee • Enroll in SPA 7980 • Hold Prospectus Meeting • Conduct Research • Write Dissertation
A light at the end of the tunnel? • Give dissertation to editorial office by deadline (typically just prior to mid-point of the semester) • Pass Dissertation Defense • Signatures: • Dissertation • Final Examination Report form • Final Electronic Submission
In order to Graduate: • At least 2 semesters from Quals to graduation • No more than 5 years after Quals • Register for > 3 credit hours in last semester • Apply for degree with the Registrar’s office
