Dispersion • As light waves pass from one medium to another (air → glass), the speed of the wave will change and refraction occurs (light waves will bend) • Shorter wavelengths of light will bend more than longer wavelengths • Different colors of light have different wavelengths, so different colors will bend different amounts
Dispersion Red (Longest λ) → Bends least Violet (Shortest λ) → Bends most
Color of Objects • Depends on what the object is made of and the color of light that shines on it • Certain materials will reflect some colors of light and absorb other colors of light Green leaf appears green because it reflects green light and absorbs all other colors, so only the green light will reach your eye
Color of Objects When red and blue light shine on a green block, it appears black • White light contains all colors, so blocks have a certain color • When only selected colors are shined on the blocks, the appearance of some blocks will change When red and green light shine on a violet block, it appears black
Primary Colors of Light • Three specific colors of light that can be combined in varying amounts to create all other colors • Red, Green, and Blue
Secondary Colors • Three colors of light that can be formed by mixing two primary colors of light • Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta
Complementary Colors • Two colors (a primary and a secondary) that can be mixed to form white light
Mixing Pigments • Pigments (dyes) are materials that absorb some colors and reflect other colors, giving objects their appearance • Primary Colors: cyan, yellow, magenta • Complementary colors combine to form black • no reflected light
