  1. Hypothesis & Variables

  2. The Hypothesis • A testable explanation of an observation • A hypothesis is not simply an educated guess about what you have observed. It must be able to be tested!

  3. The Hypothesis Cont’d. • How do we write hypotheses? • We write them in If-Then Statements • Example:Ifthe temperature of a cup of water is raised, then the amount of sugar that dissolves will increase.

  4. Variables & Controls • A variableis anything that changes in a scientific experiment. • A control is what you use to compare the results to in the end of the experiment.

  5. Types of Variables • There are two types of variables • Independent • Dependent

  6. Forming a Hypothesis with Variables • The independent variable goes after the “If” Ifthe temperature of a cup of water is raised, then the amount of sugar that dissolves will increase.

  7. Forming a Hypothesis with Variables • The dependent variable goes after the “Then” Ifthe temperature of a cup of water is raised, thenthe amount of sugar that dissolves will increase.

  8. Now you try! • If you spend more time studying, then your grade will improve. • Independent Variable = • Dependent Variable =

  9. Now you try! • If you spend more time studying, then your grade will improve. • Independent Variable = amount of time spent studying • Dependent Variable = grade

  10. Now you try! • If the temperature of the room is increased, then the students will get colder faster. • Independent variable = • Dependent variable =

  11. Now you try! • If the temperature of the room is increased, then the students will get colder faster. • Independent variable = temperature of room • Dependent variable = students will get colder faster

  12. Remember Variables & Controls • A variable is anything that changes in a scientific experiment • The control is what you use to compare the results to in the end of the experiment.

  13. RememberTypes of Variables • There are two types of variables • Independent • Dependent

  14. Another way to think is... • Independent variable = cause • Dependent variable = effect

  15. Info about the Independent Variable • The independent variable is what you change. • Cause • a.k.a. Manipulated Variable • Graphed on x-axis

  16. Info about the Dependent Variable • The dependent variable is what changes because of the independent variable. • Effect • a.k.a. Responding Variable • Graphed on y-axis
