  1. A common global framework for marine data management Helen Glaves

  2. Marine research • Multidisciplinary, ecosystem level approach • Requires large amounts of good quality, interoperable data • Capture once – use many times

  3. Oceanographic data • Wide range of measurements and variables

  4. Oceanographic data • Wide range of measurements and variables • Collected by multitude of research institutes, governmental organisations and private companies

  5. Oceanographic data • Wide range of measurements and variables • Collected by multitude of research institutes, governmental organisations and private companies • Derived from broad spectrum of multidisciplinary projects/programmes

  6. Oceanographic data Wide range of measurements and variables Derived from broad spectrum of multidisciplinary projects/programmes Collected by multitude of research institutes, governmental organisations and private companies Using various sensors to measure physical, chemical, biological, geological and geophysical parameters

  7. Data acquistion • Sensors installed on various platforms: • Research vessels • Satellites • Buoys/floats/gliders • Aircraft • Submersibles • Fixed moorings • Fauna

  8. Barriers to re-using data • Use of different • Formats • Standards • Best practice • Co-ordinate systems • Technologies • National and organisational data access policies

  9. Europe USA Regional data infrastructures Australia • A number of regional initiatives have developed marine data management infrastructures • Promoted and supported by international organizations - UNESCO‘s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), GEO etc. BUT Implemented according to regional requirements and priorities

  10. Ocean Data Interoperability Platform ODIP & ODIP2 EU-US-Australia collaborative projects Funded in parallel by European Commission, National Science Foundation (NSF) and Australian Government ODIP October 2012 – October 2015 ODIP2 May 2015 – May 2018 Promoting the development of a common global framework for marine data management

  11. International Initiatives Regional Marine Data Infrastructures USA INTEROPERABILITY Europe USA USA Australia USA USA

  12. Marine Data Harmonisation IG Objectives • Promote the development of a common global framework for the management of marine data • Identify the challenges and barriers to establishing interoperability of data and services in the marine domain. • Promote the use of common standards and best practice across the marine data management community • Inform the activities of other RDA IG/WGs with relevant input and feedback from the marine domain • Disseminate the outcomes of relevant RDA WGs/IGs to the marine data management community
