What is a symbol? • Symbol: a person, place, or object that stands for something beyond itself. • Symbolism (using a symbol) allows authors to communicate in ways beyond the limits of language. • A symbol gains its meaning from the context of the text, and it can often change over the course of a text.
How to recognize a symbol • Make note of people, places, or objects that… • Are mentioned repeatedly • Are described in detail • Are central or important to the characters or the plot • Ask yourself how this person, place, or object could be related to a major theme of the text
How to analyze a symbol • Identify the symbol • Brainstorm what the symbol represents • Explain the effect of the symbol • How does the symbol affect the plot? • How does the symbol affect the characters? • How does the symbol affect you as a reader? • Explain the author’s purpose in creating the symbol • Why would the author choose this person, place, or object?
