Unified Governance Working Group PresentationRev. Dr. Bernard Wilson, Chair STATUS OF ACTIVITY Executive Council Spring 2010
Introduction • UGov Members here with us today • Task today: update on what the working group has done & is doing • Process we’ve been tasked from General Synod and EC: bring a proposal for unified governance by the fall meetings (for discussion and input), in the timeframe given to us… • Review Plan of Action & Synod resolution
WHAT WE HAVE DONE Headlines of the December meeting • created a Dialogue & Discernment process • drafted the related materials
ACCOMPLISHMENTS 1. Gathered an extraordinary diversity of the church in a room with good will and shared purpose, focused on the task at hand 2. Members have all agreed to serve on various task groups 3. Invited Dialogue and Discernment sessions & are receiving and beginning to process data; observing that people are asking questions and feeling safe to critique, comment, and offer constructive ideas for the working group 4. Created a great (and growing) website for transparency: www.ucc.org/governance
Accomplishments • Monthly working group teleconferences: ● listen to what is coming in from dialogue & discernments ● make decisions on how best to work with input that is coming in DYNAMIC LIVING PROCESS: ● Things are happening ● on schedule ● with respect We move forward & step back when we need to
CHALLENGES • Time frame: to accomplish the POA & M • Continuing request for a diagram to compare the current structure and new proposal: ● No proposal to diagram yet. ● We are in the discernment period of this journey. ● We are in a Dynamic Living Process. The process will inform the proposal that is yet to be created in the July and Sept meetings of the working group • Various understandings of transparency • Tricky to take all the complexities of this process to make it meaningful and useful: there are many lenses & entry points into this process: people understand its meaning very differently. • We don’t know what will be, because we are still discerning what will be
What We Need From You • Prayerfully and faithfully uphold the process and the Working Group! • Share our living dynamic process! ● We are in discernment ● We are not taking GFT II and simply re-working it Although Synod does tell us to be mindful of GFT II’s core principles ● Something new is being created, drawing from the dialogue and discernment process • Communicate • Help get word out about the website • The Working Group is working in a diligent and trustworthy fashion. Reassure the circles of the church that you serve and network • TRUST! TRUST! TRUST!
