(I/II) • 3,782,524 persons aged over 50 - 36% of Czech population • 3,155,275 – persons aged 50-75 -30% of Czech population • 1,598,883 persons aged over 65 - 15% of Czech population • Life expectancy: • 81 for women • 74 for men • by the Czech Statistical Office (31. 12. 2009)

Research design • Sociological research combined qualitative and quantitative techniques • Stages of research (April – June 2010): • 1th stage – 23 in-depth interviews with HR managers, bureau of labour employees and NGO with programs for seniors • 2nd stage – 5 focus groups with seniors, HR managers and NGO • 3rd stage –questionnairsurveyCzech seniors (2020 respondents) • Analyses (July – August 2010): • Qualitativeanalysis (FG, in-depthinterviews) • Quantitativeanalysis (SPSS, statistical tests of dependency, etc.) 50+ Actively, Šárka Hastrmanová

Work opportunities& ambitions of seniors • Czech seniors have less work opportunities than younger generations? • Seniors do not agree that they are less work ambitious then others (1/3 strongly disagree) • Seniors do not agree with the statement that they rather go to early retirement then stay employed (70% disagree) 50+ Actively, Šárka Hastrmanová

Generation 50+ and further education • Almost 30% of respondents aged 50-74 have recently attended at least one of the following forms of education: • Training (profesional) – 21% • Courses (languages, computer, etc.) – 13% • Retraining – 4% • Overall, 63% of respondents would like to improve in at least some of the measured skills: • foreign languages (27%) • computers (25%) 50+ Actively, Šárka Hastrmanová

Let´s „talk“ and „compute“ withgeneration 50+ 68% of respondents are not satisfied with their knowledge of foreign languages (respondents of lower education, older seniors, unemployed, women) The computer skills decrease with age(more likely people with basic education, factory workers, retired people and women) 50+ Actively, Šárka Hastrmanová

Retraining • 4% of respondents took part in retraining courses • Content of retraining courses were estimated as useful • Majority of respondents were satisfied with quality BUT • Efficiency of retraining courses is low because it is not designed with the aim to fill in available work places • Retraining courses do not correspond with the needs of employers 50+ Actively, Šárka Hastrmanová

Let ´s have a rest in retirement… • Retirement is mostly perceived as time for rest, seniors are looking forward to be in retirement (vision of freetime, hobbies and leisure time) • Top 5 freetime activities in retirement: • Gardening • Walking, fishing, etc. • Reading, sudoku and crosswords • Looking after grandchildren • Homeworking • The only negative perception of retirement is connected to worseningphysicalcondition and decline of income 50+ Actively, Šárka Hastrmanová
