Parentsand teens willhavetheopportunityto learnabouttheCHP’s StartSmartprogram, adriver safetyeducation classwhich targets new and futurelicensedteenagedrivers betweentheageof 15 - 19 and theirparents/guardians.CIG CommunitySafetySaturdaywilltakeplaceatCapitalInsuranceGroup, 2300 Garden Road, on Saturday,September 6, 2014, from10:00a.m. to2:00 p.m. MADD can seea futurewithout drunk driving The“MADD Crash Cars”arevisualeducationaltools presentedwith theintention to changebehaviorsand attitudesconcerningthedangers of drinking and drivingand ridingwith an impaireddriver.The“Crash Car”Exhibitalso addresses theexcessiveuseof speed and thefailureto useseatbelts, andexplainstheroles thateach of thesefactors playin theinjuryor death of lovedones. TheMADD booth willfeaturegraphicdisplaysof autoaccidents.Volunteers willdistributeinformationalmaterialrelated tothedangersand preventionof drunk driving.VictoriaFlores, MADDChapterLeaderandVictimAdvocate, explains, “Over 10,000 peoplein theUnited States arekilled by drunk drivers everyyear. On average, someoneis killedin adrunk driving crash every51 minutes. In 2011, 226 childrenwerekilledin drunk drivingcrashes.Thesetragedies are100% preventable." Sincethen, theyhave been volunteeringand speakingto teens andparents atclasses and atCIG CommunitySafetySaturdayevents. StartSmartclasses increasetraffic-safetyknowledgeand better prepareteens for theroad ahead. Fred andKathyForgnonewillbeon hand to talk withattendees abouttheStartSmartprogram. • MontereyPoliceDepartmentwillbringasquad car as wellas crimeprevention information. • MontereyCountySheriff’s Office–CoastalStationMontereywillbring crimeprevention handouts as wellas their K-9, SWATTeam,and Search andRescuevehicles.Theywillalso do “meetand greets”with their K-9 team. * MontereyCountyCrimePrevention OfficersAssociation willprovidesafetybrochures.
