  1. Three Skeleton Key By: George G. Toudoze First appeared in Esquire Magazine in January 1937.

  2. George G. Toudoze 1847-1904 Born in France, George had many interests….he was a playwright, an essayist, and an illustrator. He also had a great interest in the sea and worked on a history of the French Navy

  3. SETTING • Background:This story takes place in a lighthouse “newly built off the coast of Guiana”. French Guiana is a non-souvereign overseas département of France, located on the Caribbean coast of South America. Settled by the French in 1604, French Guiana was the site of a notorious penal settlements until 1951.

  4. LIGHTHOUSE • For many people, lighthouses represent more than simple aids to navigation. The sight of a lighthouse often conjures up visions of shipwrecks, great storms, brave acts of courage, adventure, and the isolation of some remote lighthouse station. They revive the stories of times past when lighthouses guided fishermen safely back home despite the treacherous storms, fogs, and other dangers encountered by those making their living from the sea.

  10. The Flying Dutchman A fabled (no one knows for sure) Dutch ghost ship whose captain is said to be condemned to sail the seas until Judgement Day…If you see the Flying Dutchman it is supposed to bring bad luck!
