Reptiles • As animals evolved from fish to amphibians, some moved on to being reptiles
Thick Skin • Reptiles have thick dry skin that prevents water from escaping the body • Reptiles must drink water and breath air into lungs
Body Temperature • Most reptiles are ectothermes • Ectothermes – An animal that cannot control its body temperature
Eggs • Reptile eggs are called amniotic eggs • These eggs are surrounded by a hard shell and contain yolk • These eggs will not dry out
Reptiles There are 4 types of reptiles: Turtles/Tortoses, Snakes, Lizards and Tuataras
Turtles and Tortoises Generally, tortoises live on land while turtles live mostly in water
Crocodiles and Alligators A crocodile has a narrow head and pointed snout, while an alligator has a rounded head
The Alligator and Crocodile has a special 3rd eyelid to protect itself from water
Snakes and Lizards These are the most common types of reptiles on Earth When a snake flicks its tongue, it is grabbing tiny molecules in the air to see if there is prey around Whether a snake kills with poison, or strangulation they all eat the same way - Snakes unhinge their jaw and swallow food whole
Horned Lizard The Horned Lizard squirts blood out of its eyes as a defensive mechanism
