Assignment • Directions: • Select an idiom from idiomsite.com • Think about its meaning for a while • Write a level one description for the idiom. (remember this is the literal one) • Write a level two or three description for the idiom. (remember this is the one that will take thought) • Include your justification for your level 2 or 3 description (tell me why your description qualifies for that level)
Assignment • Example: “All thumbs” • Level 1: I think of a hand with all thumbs. This is a literal interpretation. What you think is what you get. It requires little or no thinking. • Level 2-3: When I think of this idiom I see a tiled black and white kitchen floor that has a broken glass and a pool of orange juice in the center. A woman is on the floor trying to wipe up the juice, but every time she tries to clean it, the pool just widens. • Justification: This is a level 2-3 interpretation because spills occur when you are all thumbs. It also gives the impression of the woman trying to clean up and unable to do it. When you are all thumbs, you are unable to complete the task.
