  1. PROVERBS 16

  2. GOD’S REVELATION • Creation • Prophets • Apostles • Scriptures • The Lord Jesus Christ

  3. SCRIPTURE: GOD’S WRITTEN REVELATION • “The Scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man.” • All the words in Scripture are God’s words in such a way that to disbelieve or disobey any word of Scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God. • Scripture, having been given by divine inspiration, is inerrant, and infallible, so that it is free from all falsehood and is true and reliable in all matters it addresses

  4. PROVERBS 16:1, 9, 33GOD’S PROVIDENCE • The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps. The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD. • Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Matthew 10:29-30

  5. Creator – creation Distinction For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.  And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Col 1:16-17 One Triune Creator Personal Sovereign God Independent Infinite Authority REVELATION Creation Dependent Finite Submissive

  6. PROVERBS 16:2, 25SIN OF SELF-DECEPTION • All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirit. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. • Noetic effects: the effects of the fall on the mind. • For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, Romans 1:21-22 • You cannot trust your emotions; trust God’s Word.

  7. PROVERBS 16:3, 7SELF-DECEPTIONS SOLUTION • Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. When a man’s ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. • And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 • If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! Matt 7:11

  8. PROVERBS 16:4GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY/OUR RESPONSIBILITY • The LORD has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble. • God, who is not the author of sin, knows and has predetermined what we will freely choose and we are held accountable for our choices. • Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, Romans 9:21-22

  9. BIBLICAL ANSWERS • The Triune God is all good • The Triune God is all powerful • There is a hierarchy of good • The Triune God has moral, logical reasons what He does – allowing evil, pain, suffering, and judgment • The Triune God is not obligated to give us His reasons for what He does • The Triune God does give us some of His reasons

  10. SOME OF GOD’S REASONS • Judgment of evil • Fatherly discipline • Developing believer’s character • Redemption of sinners • His glory

  11. PROVERBS 16:5, 18, DESTINY OF THE PROUD • Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the LORD; be assured, he will not go unpunished. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. • Eve: “I wonder who is right?” • Humble submission or death • The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor. Proverbs 15:33

  12. PROVERBS 16:6, 17, 19GOD’S SOLUTION FOR PRIDE • By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the LORD one turns away from evil. The highway of the upright turns aside from evil; whoever guards his way preserves his life. It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud. • For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 • Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17

  13. PROVERBS 16:8, 16PURSUE WHAT’S BEST • Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues with injustice. How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver. • But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. 1 Timothy 6:9-10 • What do you want? What would others say you want?

  14. PROVERBS 16:10-15THE KING • They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.” Revelation 17:14 • Authority • Under authority

  15. PROVERBS 16:10-15 • An oracle is on the lips of a king; his mouth does not sin in judgment. • A just balance and scales are the LORD’s; all the weights in the bag are his work. • It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness. • Righteous lips are the delight of a king, and he loves him who speaks what is right. • A king’s wrath is a messenger of death, and a wise man will appease it. • In the light of a king’s face there is life, and his favor is like the clouds that bring the spring rain.

  16. HUMAN AUTHORITY &SUBMISSION TO HUMAN AUTHORITY • Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him. Ephesians 6:5-9 • Are you modeling Christ or the world?

  17. PROVERBS 16:20,22HOW TO SUCCEED • Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD. Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it, but the instruction of fools is folly. • You need two things to succeed: • God’s Word • Faith • How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes! Psalm 119:9-12

  18. PROVERBS 16:21, 23, 24HOW TO TALK • The wise of heart is called discerning, and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness. The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to his lips. Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. • Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Ephesians 4:29-31

  19. PROVERBS 16:27-30HOW THE UNREGENERATE TALK • A worthless man plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire. A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends. A man of violence entices his neighbor and leads him in a way that is not good. Whoever winks his eyes plans dishonest things; he who purses his lips brings evil to pass. • for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. Romans 3:23-25

  20. PROVERBS 16:32THE CONSTANT BATTLE • Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city. • War with others is easier than war with yourself. • Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 1 Peter 2:11 • Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. Ephesians 6:11
