  16. Battle of Bunker Hill • 1775 • Technically a British victory but showed Americans could fight. • “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.” 

  17. Battle of Long Island • 1776 • Big defeat for G.W. • British captured New York city. 

  18. Trenton & Princeton • 1776 • G.W.’s sneak attack on Christmas night 1776. • These battles encouraged American soldiers. 

  19. Battle of Saratoga • 1777 • Turning point of the Revolution. • Convinced France to become our ally. 

  20. Valley Forge • 1777-78 • Brutal winter of 1777-78 for G.W. and his men. • “These are the times that try men’s souls…” 

  21. Battle of Yorktown • 1781 • Final major battle of the Revolution. • Cornwallis was trapped on Yorktown peninsula. • French fleet helped trap Cornwallis 

  22. Treaty of Paris • 1783 • Treaty that ended the Revolution. • British gave the U.S. all land up to the Mississippi River. 
