MICROBES AT WORK ARE WE READY? Background and Epidemiology of Viruses: Implications to Health and the Philippines Emerging and Re-emerging Influenza Viruses: History and Developments DR. VERONICA CHAN Emilio Aguinaldo College - Manila Thousands of different microorganisms affect the health and safety of the world’s populations of humans, animals and plants. Such examples are epidemics of new and old infectious diseases that periodically emerge in the past few years, these have increased not only in the Philippines but also globally. And with the present situation, there is a rising threat of these microorganisms magnifying the global burden of infections. Preparedness of such is best addressed through reliance on rapid detection, diagnosis, distinct prevention and control strategies. So, ARE WE READY? The purpose of the symposium is to heighten awareness, increase vigilance and most importantly, educate ourselves in order to address the growing and globalizing effect of microbes. Also, the symposium will showcase representative microorganisms most especially viruses that are of public health concern in the Philippines.
