  1. Antivirus Software • IT Services have site licences for two antivirus products to cover all staff and students, both on and off campus: • Sophos AntiVirus and McAfee VirusScan. For student-owned computers we recommend using Sophos AntiVirus. However if you are ‘off campus’ and do not have broadband use McAfee VirusScan. • McAfee release updates for VirusScan daily, Sophos release updates whenever they know of a new virus’s existence. • Uninstall existing antivirus software • If you have another antivirus package installed, disable or uninstall it before installing a new antivirus package – it is advisable to only have one scanner running at any time. If your antivirus package does not have an uninstall option in its entry on the Start > Programs menu, you must uninstall it via the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Windows Control Panel.Sophos AntiVirus • Download from: www.manchester.ac.uk/itservices/antivirus/software/ • If necessary, come into one of the PC clusters on the campus and download the software, saving the files to a CD or USB memory-stick so that you can take them to your machine and then run them to complete the installation. • McAfee VirusScan • Students can purchase a CD for £2 from the CompShop in the Kilburn Building (ground floor). • Already infected with a virus? • If your machine is already infected you may need to run a full antivirus scan from Safe Mode in order to clean it– press f8 during the boot up sequence to get a menu with this option.Further cleanup advice and other general antivirus advice is available from: • www.manchester.ac.uk/itservices/antivirus
