Identifying the Teeth • Incisors (6) • Canines (2) • Premolars (8) • Molars • Cats have fewer premolars & moloars
Deciduous vs. Permanent Teeth • Start losing baby teeth at 4 months (incisors are first) • Most incisors come in at 4 months old
Home Dental Care • Reduces bad breath – “Halitosis” • A build up a plaque leads to tarter leads to gingivitis • Toothbrushes • Toothpaste • Floride – Prevent plaque • Constructive chewing • Periodontal disease – build up of tarter • Gingivitis – bacterial infection of gum (red)
Professional Cleaning • Needed by 3rd or 4th birthday • 1st step is physical exam • Wear protective mask to prevent bacteria from entering your mouth
Tarter Removal • Dental Pick – don’t spend more than 10 seconds on a tooth (enamel – no nerves) • Ultrasonic scaling • Use polishing compound • If you must remove a tooth, important to follow up with antibiotic
Documentation • Educating Client • How often to brush • Use of Canned Food vs. Kibble • Must document: • Overall Dental Health • Extractions Performed • Tarter Build Up
