Pandemic (Avian) Flu To be or not to be…
Describe Influenza • RNA virus with 8 single strands of RNA wound helically and associated with proteins to form a nucleocapsid • Outer envelope has spikes containing the enzymes hemaglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N) which assist the virus entry into the cell
How does it avoid the Immune System • Two ways • 1) Intracellular and encased in a membrane • 2) Changes the structure of the H and N proteins, making existing antibodies useless (high recombination rate also makes entire new organisms!)
The 1918 Flu Pandemic • Probably started in Kansas (Fort Riley) then hit Boston before spreading worldwide • Killed 20-40 million people, mostly healthy young adults. • Killed rapidly. Killed more people than died in WWI
I had a little bird, Its name was Enza. • I opened the window, • And in-flu-enza.
What kind of Flu was it • Genetic information indicates that it was a bird flu that mutated to be able to infect pigs and humans
Bird Flu • H5N1 normally occurs in birds like chickens and ducks. Wild ducks are a reservoir of infection. • Right now limited to infecting humans that have had extensive contact with poultry. • What happened in Hong Kong? • Other countries?
Is it likely that a avian flu pandemic will occur again? • Some say yes, others no. Why
Global Plan • Education • Closing of public schools/offices • Quarantine? • Respirators • Drugs • Others • Check out www.cdc.gov
Local Pandemic Flu Plan • MnSCU is working on one which includes shutting the University down and having the Nursing Dept. and students administering health needs to those quarantined on campus. • Statewide, Governor decides how/when to take action.
