3. The County of Wiltshire If you are attracted to travel, visit the County of Wiltshire which is located in South West England. The area of Wiltshire was colonized in the pre-Roman period and is exceptionally rich in archeological fragments and antiquities. Don‘t miss Old Sarum, the first settlement of Salisbury and the new city of Salisbury itself. At the edge of Salisbury Plains you will find a remarkable monument, Stonehenge.

4. Old Sarum - the model Old Sarum was an Iron Age fort built on a hill, close to the trade crossroads and the river Avon. The evidence of settlement comes from 3.000 BC. Between 43 AD to 410 AD it was an important site of Roman invaders.

5. Old Sarum Castle and Cathedral The construction of the Royal Residence and the cathedral in Old Sarum started in 1069, just three years after William the Conqueror, the Norman King, won the Battle of Hastings and became the King of England.

6. Old Sarum – the base of the original Cathedral The site was exposed to long-lasting conflicts between the clergy and the King‘s military because Old Sarum`s space and access to water were limited. In 1219 the cathedral was pulled down and the stone was used as building material for New Sarum.

7. Salisbury Cathedralof St. Mary … in 1220 the first stones were laid for the new Cathedral, just 2 km further down by the hill on the confluence of five rivers. The main church body was finished within 38 years and the church spire is the tallest in the UK.

18. Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument of the Iron Ages… … is 8 miles from Salisbury. The mysterious ring of stones, dated 5.000 BC, attracts people from all the world round. From the early beginning it was a sacred place and a burial area.

19. At the time of Summer Solstice… …there are rituals and ceremonies with music and dancing depicting the Celtic and Druid customs of worshiping the Sun and nature.
