The RA as a process captured in a document • ‘The RA should act as a demonstration of the institution’s capacity for reflection and critical evaluation… The RA should…reference the evidence on which the evaluation is based.’ ELIR Handbook 2nd Edition (2008, QAAS) 4th February 2009
‘Good practice’ in RA • RA should result from an inclusive, participatory process, involving staff and students • Focus on strategic enhancement, noting that ‘enhancement includes assurance’ • Follow QAAS guidance on structure • Ensure the institutional structure and ethos is explained clearly • Use appropriate examples and case studies to illustrate points 4th February 2009
Scope and components of the RA • Introduction:incl.contextual factors; method used to produce the RA • Management of the student learning experience:incl. graduate attributes and employability; learning environment; equality of opportunity; staff development • Institution-led monitoring of quality and standards: incl. Role of case studies • The RA can and should provide examples and evidence. In addition, we have the freedom to include more detailed case studies. • These should not be confined to ‘show and tell’ of good practice but should illustrate our capacity to manage the quality of the student experience 4th February 2009
How today’s workshop activities will feed into the RA • This is the first of three workshops • Each will address issues in one of the 3 substantive RA sections • Today’s topic is ‘Management of the student learning experience’ • Your views on the effectiveness of our approach in key areas • Examples and cases studies to reflect the diversity of approaches adopted 4th February 2009
