The Big Picture The Big Picture D. Nicole Smith – Commissioned Study, January 2012Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce • STEM jobs will grow from 6.8 million to 8 million by 2018 • Jobs requiring STEM competencies – 45 million • STEM will provide 2.4 million job openings in 2018 • 1.1 million net new jobs and 1.3 million replacement jobs • 92% of STEM jobs will require some postsecondary education and training • For women and minorities, STEM is the best equal opportunity employer (although pay gaps still exist)
The Big Picture • Tennessee STEM Innovation Network (TSIN) • Funded through Race to the Top through June 2014 • TSIN serves as the state’s primary vehicle for aligning and coordinating STEM education policies, practices, and partners.
West TN STEM Collaboratory Vision: • The West Tennessee STEM Collaboratory unites K-12, institutes of higher education (IHE), and STEM industry partners in an unprecedented approach to transforming STEM education and workforce opportunities throughout the region. • The vision will be achieved through the establishment of a West Tennessee STEM Hub and STEM Platform School that will facilitate regional knowledge-sharing, research, and productive partnerships for supporting K-12 students and teachers in STEM.

West TN STEM Hub Vision: The West TN STEM Collaboratory Hub will serve as a resource for West Tennessee to increase students’ interest in and preparedness for the STEM workforce through a variety of activities. Collaborative partnerships between STEM Hub, Platform School, and STEM community (K-16 faculty, industry, government) professionals will be the cornerstone of this effort.
West TN STEM Hub Goals: • To support the successful operation of the platform school • To assemble and facilitate utilization of curricula aligned with state and common core standards that effectively engage K-12 students in STEM learning • To create a sustainable culture of sharing and collaboration in the local and state STEM community through establishing productive partnerships

West TN STEM Hub • Annual STEM Challenge Summit • June 6 – 7, 2013 (pilot Summit) • 20 participants • Goals and Objectives • STEM Challenge for 2013-2014: Research, Design, and Construction of a model to redesign the Herpetarium at the Memphis Zoo • STEM Teams (Science, Engineering, and Mathematics) worked to develop lessons and activities that would help Challenge teams explore specific components of the Herpetarium Project • Lessons also designed to be implemented separately as part of a standard curriculum • Summer 2014: expand to Dyersburg, Jackson, and Martin • with locally-developed challenges
West TN STEM Hub • Innovations in K-20 STEM Education Conference • Goal: To create a ‘think tank’ environment that will generate ideas and transformative strategies to move West TN STEM education forward through collaborative effort from all stakeholders. • Each conference will feature discussions regarding: • Innovations in STEM teaching and learning • STEM pipeline issues • STEM teacher preparation • Legislative and policy implications for STEM education, and • Opportunities for enhancing K-12 STEM education through Career and Technology programs • First held May 27, 2013, 90 attendees
West TN STEM Hub • Partnerships/Sustainability – Sustainability Team • Complete Sustainability Plan by November 2013 • Vision for Hub after regional replication • Estimate of administrative costs for Hub and sub-hubs • Estimate of costs for platform school not covered by district • Estimate of costs associated with individual initiatives • Online STEM course development • West TN STEM Master Teacher training • Annual STEM Challenge Summit • Annual K-20 Innovations Conference • Identify and recruit partners region-wide • Work with marketing team to develop materials • Catalog internships, externships, speakers, tours, etc • Identify and pursue funding opportunities
