Automated Nightlight Figure 3: Signal flow through the circuit. May06-19 Project Requirements Abstract • Design Objectives • Easy to use • Reliable • Low cost • Low maintenance • Functional Requirements • Detect outward from wall • Detection of movement • Shut off delay • Battery Back-up • Portable There are many nightlight on the market that are very cheap and efficient. However, there are not many that require minimal human interaction. The team will build a low cost, highly efficient nightlight that will only need checked as often as a smoke detector. Acknowledgment • Design Constraints • Minimum power consumption • Must work in case of power outage • Size • Budget • Lead-free components The team would like to take the time to thank Dr. Degang Chen and Iowa State University for giving us the chance to work on this project. We would like to thank Dr. Chen for lending his technical advice to the team. • Milestones • Implement human detection • Implement ambient light detection • Microcontroller to manipulate signals Project Description This nightlight will work like many other nightlights but with added functionality. First, to conserve power, there will be a ambient light detector, this will determine the overall status of the nightlight. The next portion is the movement detection. This will use infrared signals to detect whether someone is passing in front of the nightlight, at which point, the output of the nightlight will be determined. Once someone is detected by the nightlight, a bank of LED’s will illuminate the area. After passing in front of the nightlight, it will slowly turn down and go back to a low light state. Proposed Solution • Proposed Approach • Research current technologies • Sub-circuits that will work as one • Many different operating environments • Technologies Considered • Movement based detection • Lighting source • Signal manipulation • Time of day differentiation Testing Considerations • Detection circuit testing • Microcontroller testing • User testing • User environment testing Figure 2: Top down view of the nightlight Figure 1: Front view of the nightlight. Estimated Resources Personal Effort Figure 4: Detection field of the nightlight. The nightlight will not exceed 4”x1.5”x2”. The field is only limited to the area where the detection field exists. The nightlight will not block the use of the other outlet. Financial Resources Other Resources Problem Statement General Problem Statement Many nightlights offer a small amount of light which are used in many rooms of a house. Today’s market nightlights are very simple in that they require frequent user interaction. However, there may be cases where interaction is not available but a light source is needed. General Problem Solution The solution to the problem is creating a nightlight that will automatically turn on and off as a person approaches the nightlight. The project team plans to develop a nightlight that will need little or no physical contact. Operating Environment Project Schedule • Indoors of a living environment • Between 45ºF and 90ºF • Low moisture • Avoid shakes, drops or catastrophic events Intended Users and Uses • Uses • To provide a low level of light to the user • Be used as a back-up light source incase of power outages • Provide an inexpensive way to move without turning on lights • Users • Anyone who lives in their own form of housing • Anyone with access to 120V AC outlet Assumptions and Limitations Closing Summary • Assumptions • Use all over the world • May be used in other rooms • Used within office buildings • May be built into home • Limitations • Cost will not exceed $20 • Will only work indoors • Detection angle is limited to 180° • It will not cover the other outlet The impact that technology has had on the world has been gigantic. The use of new technological devices is becoming more of a corner stone in homes as well. This project will be very favorable to implement into housing because it will be efficient, low cost and very beneficial for home owners.
