  1. ASR Seminar"Emotional Memory Processing in REM and NREM Sleep States"Speaker: Erica Harris, MPH, PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience, Boston University School of Medicine, Dept of Neurology Day: Tuesday, Jan 27th Time: 1:15-2:15 pm, A blockPlace: Debate room in Library Dr. Harris will be presenting research on the different states of sleep: REM and NREM. There are two major sleep states REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-REM). Several distinctions exist between REM and NREM sleep. REM sleep differs from NREM by an increase in breathing rate, eye movements and brain activity. Other interesting distinctions include differences in emotional processing between the two sleep states. Evidence has shown that REM and NREM sleep exhibit processing specializations in the kinds of social interactions they simulate. Dream reports from REM, for example, exhibited greater numbers of aggressive social interactions and negative emotions than NREM. NREM exhibits greater numbers of friendly interactions and positive emotions than REM (McNamara, 2005). Dr. Harris's lab investigated the types of emotions and interactions that are found in REM and NREM sleep by analyzing dream content. They also attempted to determine which memories, positive or negative, could most easily be triggered during REM and NREM sleep. We hope that you can join us!
