  1. Composting at New Trier Say WHAT?

  2. What’s Composting? • It’s the process of breaking down food waste and using the finished product for environmentally friendly purposes • How does this process work? food waste + dirt, leaves, newspaper + time =Nutrient-Rich Soil

  3. Why Compost? • Reduces amount of trash going to landfills! Seriously, enough junk there anyways… • Finished compost, a very nutrient-rich soil, is beneficial for fertilizing and gardening purposes

  4. How can YOU help? • a collection bin will be in the student cafeteria during lunch periods • where you dispose organic waste such as uneaten/unfinished: • Apples • Bananas • Carrots

  5. How will my Fruits and Veggies be reused? • Outside the Gates Gym, there are two compost bins where your food will be deposited, with the help of PPS • The compost process occurs in these bins. Within months, the food and the leaves/grass will become soil that will be used for gardening

  6. What Can I Add? • Food that CAN be added: • All plain fruits • All plain veggies • Food that CANNOT be added: • Meat Products • Dairy Products • Fatty Products (i.e. Salad dressing) • Bread *Statement- the food you give us does not need to be organic certified*

  7. Go green…and blue! • This compost will eliminate certain food waste from landfills • From all of us at Environmental Club, we thank you!
