  8. CREB (Cyclic AMP response element-binding protein) • CREB (Cyclic AMP response element-binding protein)functions in the control of many different cellular processes: • The survival and proliferation of β-cells is regulated by glucose and by various hormones such as • glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) • Which appear to act synergistically to activate the CREB co-activators called TORCs • Regulating the biosynthesis of Glucagon • Activation of neuronal gene transcription responsible for learning and memory • Expression of clock genes • Expression of brain-derived neutrophic factor (BDNF) • Fast-spiking interneurons (Module 12: Figure schizophrenia). • The CREB/TORC transcriptional duo play a critical role in energy metabolism • peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) coactivator-1 (PGC-1) • PPAR transcription factors - function in liver cell gluconeogenesis • Transcriptional regulation aquaporin AQP2 and AQP3 - vasopressin-induced antidiuresis • Melanogenesis • NMDA receptor hypofunction in schizophrenia.
