The city was founded in 1600 by the daimyo Date Masamune. Masamune, who did not like his previous stronghold Iwadeyama because it was difficult to access from Edo, moved to Sendai because of its ideal location. Sendai was in the center of Masamune’s newly defined territories, on a major road from Edo and near the sea. Tokugawa Ieyasu allowed Masamune to build a new castle in Aobayama, Sendai. Sendai, incorporated as a city in 1889, had a population of 86,000 with its areas of 17.45 square kilometers. The city grew through seven annexations and its population exceeded 1 million in 1999. In 2005, the city had an estimated population of 1,028,214 and a density of 1,304.69 persons per square kilometers. The area was 788.09 square kilometers. Because of its great numbers of trees and plants, Sendai was considered to be one of Japan’s greenest cities. Before World War II, the city was known as The City of Trees. Most houses, temples and shrines in Sendai had gardens with many trees because residents were encouraged to plant trees in their gardens.
