1. West Florida • West Florida was Janie’s childhood home where she was raised by her grandmother. Janie becomes a woman here and his married off to Logan Killicks. • Happiness, innocence, maturity, discovery • West Florida serves as Janie’s foundation. The situations that occur in West Florida shape Janie’s early beliefs and dreams.
2. Eatonville • Janie gets married and runs away to Eatonville with Joe Starks. Joe becomes the mayor and Janie is his loyal wife. Janie is contained by Joe and does not have a voice. Joe passes away and Janie becomes free and independent. Janie then meets a young, flirty man named Tea Cake. • Success, respect, envy, wealth, power, power-less • Eatonville is a fresh start for Janie, but is the place where her dreams of independence are smashed. Janie is controlled by Joe and is treated poorly.
3. Jacksonville • Janie marries Tea Cake and they move to Jacksonville where Tea Cake runs away with Janie’s money. Eventually, Tea Cake comes back and says he found employment. Also, he wins Janie’s money back. • Love, happiness, struggle • Jacksonville is where Janie and Tea Cake’s love is put to the test. They experience their first troubles in Jacksonville.
4. The Everglades • Janie and Tea Cake move to The Everglades and find employment and happiness. Tea Cake and Janie experience problems in their relationship, but make up. A storm hits the Everglades when Janie is about 40 years old which causes them to flee to safety. • Success, happiness, settlement • The Everglades become home for Janie and Tea Cake. Janie grows old here with Tea Cake and Janie becomes the best version of herself.
5. West Palm Beach • Janie and Tea Cake took refuge in West Palm Beach after a storm hit the Everglades, but do not stay here long. • Refuge, temporary • West Palm Beach was a place of refuge and was not ever a home for Janie. However, she did bury Tea Cake in West Palm Beach.
6. The Everglades • Janie and Tea Cake return here and Tea Cake becomes deathly sick from rabies. Janie shoots Tea Cake, is put on trial and is set free. • Loss, dying love, suffering • Tea Cake is deathly sick, but during this stay at the Everglades it becomes obvious that Janie is completely in love with Tea Cake. This shows that Janie finally got the true love that she had wanted.
7. Eatonville • Janie returns here after Tea Cake’s death and intends on planting seeds that Tea Cake left behind. • New start, memories, foundation • Janie returns to Eatonville for closure. She wants to continue her love for Tea Cake by planting his seeds and growing a new life.
