  8. the art of carving • involves cutting, hitting, flaking, chipping and rubbing • tools…hammer, chisel, saw • soap – carved with a pocketknife • wood – small piece is whittled with a pocketknife; large piece requires wooden mallets and razor-sharp chisels • stone – soapstone carved with a pocketknife; marble, limestone, and alabaster are carved with hammer and chisel; granite (head stones) requires tools with carbide tips and thermal torch that shatters in small fragments
