Krumboltz’s Theory of ‘Planned Happenstance’ • Career indecision can be desirable and sensible as it provides the opportunity to benefit from unplanned events. • Unpredictable social factors, chance events and environmental factors are important influences within a rapidly changing labour market • Krumboltz argues that career ‘management’ should focus on developing the following skills and attitudes: • Curiosity to explore learning opportunities • Persistence to deal with obstacles • Flexibility to address a variety of circumstances and events • Optimism to maximise benefits from unplanned events.
Self Awareness • Who I am? • How did I get here? • What expectations did I bring with me about what follows my Medical training? • What expectations do others (friends, family, tutors) have about what follows my Medical Training?
Strengths • What do I like? • What am I good at? • What are my key achievements? • What am I proudest of? • A number of positive psychology based questionnaires are available via the University of Pennsylvania • https://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/
Moving forward – goal setting • Set goals that actually motivate you • Make them specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, timed… • Write them down • Make an action plan – share with people you trust to build in accountability
