Permaculture in the Pioneer ValleySTOCKSCH 290P-01 (Spring 2013) • UMass Amherst Stockbridge School of Agriculture • Sponsored by the UMass Permaculture Initiative in partnership with the Amherst School System • 12 students from UMass and Hampshire College • 3 working groups • Fort River, Crocker Farm, and Wildwood
What are we doing? • Community Involvement • Create an outdoor learning environment • Produce a Yield • Beautify the Space • Transform Lawn into Life • Long Term Sustainability • Who will be the Champion?
Site Analysis and Assessment • Last year 2 apple trees were planted in front of the school. • Teachers have voiced a need for a safe route to walk to kids to the garden. (Cross Walk) • Excellent South East Sun • More than enough space • Located by the entrance sign (Eye Candy/Curb Appeal) • Water Spigot at building (Will Not Be Enough) • Soil Test as soon as the ground thaws
