What is a Classifier? Classifiers are designated handshapes and/or body pantomimes used to represent nouns and verbs. The purpose of the classifier is to provide additional information about nouns and verbs.
Descriptive Classifier Characterize nouns by their physical characteristics.
Instrument Classifier • Shows how a person handles/manipulates an obejct • Example: • Pour a water pitcher • Open the oven door
Element Classifier • Represents movements of “elements” • Example: • Air • Smoke • Water • Fire • Light
Locative Classifier • Tells the location of an object, and/or its movement. • Example: • Rocks on floor • The dog is on the bed. • BED LCL:B, DOG LCL:bentV “on-bed” • The glass is on the table. • TABLE LCL:B, GLASS LCL:C “on-table”
Semantic Classifier • Describes where the person is located, where they moved, and/or how they moved. • Example: • Person falling forward • Person laying on their back looking up • Person walking by
Body Classifier • Used to show how a person moves his/her arms, shoulders, or head. • Example: • BCL:V “look-around” • (2h) BCL:G “big-smile” • (2h) BCL:B “foot-stumbles)
Body Part Classifier • Represents specific parts of the body in action. • Example: • Chewing • Throwing a ball
