Eating Disorders Coalition for research, policy & Action Paula Drelick SB 780
MISSION: To advance the federal recognition of eating disorders as a public health priority.
KEY PRIORITIES: To further research, education and awareness of eating disorders in the United States. 2. To gain federal support for improved access to healthcare/insurance needs. 3. To encourage other Americans to advocate on behalf of victims of eating disorders and their families. The EDC is comprised of almost 35 member organizations, including hospitals, eating disorder treatment facilities, doctors, psychiatrists, nutritionists and support groups/foundations.
Insurance Issues • Families must make decisions related to recovery/continuing treatment based solely on finances and not medical advice. • Eating disorder treatment requires at least 6 weeks of in-patient treatment. • Insurance companies cover on average 10-15 days. Good Morning America News Report
Mental Health Parity • Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act • Does not explicitly mention eating disorders • Representative Patrick Kennedy Kennedy at Mental Health Parity Hearing
The FREED Act • Federal Response to Eliminate Eating Disorders Act • Fill in the gaps of the Mental Health Parity bill • Would require insurance companies to cover eating disorder treatment. • Would establish “Centers of Excellence” to conduct research, education and training to health and school/higher education professionals. • Provide funding for PSA’s and integration into anti-obesity campaigns.
February 25, 2009 – Rep. Patrick Kennedy and the EDC presented the FREED Act on Capitol Hill • Bill is currently “with committee” • EDC is encouraging advocates to contact their state representatives to co-sponsor the bill which will cause the bill to move out of committee faster, get a hearing and eventually get a floor vote. • David Jaffe, Executive Director of EDC
Eating Disorders Awareness, Prevention and Education Act • Seeks to raise awareness and prevention of eating disorders in the classroom • Currently with committee and only in the first phase of the legislative process IMPACT Act • Improved Nutrition and Activity Act of 2002 • Sought to address obesity and eating disorders simultaneously, recognizing the interdependence of the two problems • Bill never made it past committee
Opposition to BMI Reporting in Schools • EDC believes only appropriate environment is a doctor’s office, not the classroom • Child might turn to dangerous dieting techniques to lose weight and get acceptance from peers • Main problem: BMI reporting focuses on weight rather than health as the “measuring stick” for children • Children are being taught that thin = healthy, regardless of eating or exercise habits
The Role of the Public • Virtual Lobby Days • Letter writing campaigns to senators and state representatives • “Scripts” • Family/Friends Action Council (FAC) • Blog – eatingdisorderscoalition.blogspot.com • Facebook
Eating Disorder Awareness in Massachusetts • At the top of the list of states with the most coverage for treatment
Massachusetts General Hospital’s Harris Center • Founding Member of the EDC • MEDA – Multi-service Eating Disorders Association in Newton, MA • To Mentor the community in its understanding of eating disorders. • To Empower individuals to live free of body, food and weight obsessions. • To Develop eclectic and diversified treatment teams for clients and their loved ones. • To Assist individuals and their loved ones by offering the training and support necessary for recovery.
