Starbuck’s By Christina Petersen Period 5 5/15/14
The Problem • Everywhere you go, a Starbuck’s is close by. In Hemet alone, we have six within 5 miles of the school. I see this and have always wondered how far apart two different Starbucks’ are in one city. I was researching one day and came across a claim from blogger James R.A Davenport who said that the furthest you can get from a Starbucks is 170 miles and over 80% of Americans live within 20 miles of a Starbucks. With this claim, my interest was sparked and I had to know. • That is why I will attempt to answer the following question: What is the average distance between two Starbuck’s in the state of California?
Research Design • To find the information needed to answer this question, I will need to locate the cities with a Starbucks and randomly pick the cities I will use, in this case, 20 cities. I will, then, randomly select 2 Starbucks’ from each city and measure the distance between the two. • There were 2 confounding variables: The city didn’t have a Starbucks, or the city only had one city. When collecting the data, I found three of the cities I had chosen had only one and I threw out the data for that city. • I will use a T-Confidence Interval, being that standard deviation and the mean are unknown. • All randomizing was done with my TI-84
Data Analysis • The mean distances of the Starbucks in the sample are 1.4994 miles apart. The sample standard deviation of the distances between two Starbucks’ in the state of California is 1.1755. • 1.4994+ (1.746) (1.1755/ the square root of 17), 1.4994- (1.746) (1.1755/ the square root of 17) • CI( .89504,2.1038)
Summary and Conclusions • I am 95% confident that the true average of the distances between two Starbucks’ in the state of California is between .89504 miles and 2.1038 miles apart. • I recommend to future researchers who may investigate my question or a similar question to only test a portion of California instead of the entire state as whole.
Other Statistics about Starbucks • Santa Fe Springs, CA has 560 Starbucks Stores within 25 miles • The average Starbucks customer visits Starbucks 6 times per month while a loyal 20% of customers go to the stores 16 times per month’ • A Starbucks grande coffee has 320 milligrams of caffeine , over four times the amount in a Red bull • Starbucks uses over 93 million gallons of milk per year, which is enough 155 Olympic sized swimming pools • Starbucks uses 2.3 billion paper cups per year • There are over 87,000 drink combinations possibilities • California has 2,010 stores followed my Texas with 604
