Presentation Objectives • Provide an Overview of Maryland’s Career Clusters and Career Technology Education (CTE) Programs • Highlight Model CTE Pathway Programs • Discuss implementation strategies for CTE Pathway Programs within Career Clusters • Link secondary and postsecondary levels through CTE Pathway Programs
Maryland CTE Today • Nearly half (134,650) of all Maryland high school students in grades 10 - 12 enroll in CTE • 25% (13,919) of the class of 2006 completed a CTE program of study • 51% of the CTE completers also completed the coursework for meeting the University System of Maryland; in 1993, it was only 14% • 55,546 postsecondary students enroll in CTE throughout 15 of Maryland’s 16 community colleges • 4,293 postsecondary students received an occupational degree or certificate
Development of Maryland’s Career Clusters • Educators and Employers partnered to develop ten Career Clusters • Based upon Maryland’s unique employment needs • Career Pathways and Pathway Programs were identified within each Career Cluster • Over 350 employers were involved in the validation and design process • Focused on the breath, depth, and value added in CTE programs • Moved from Procedural Knowledge to focus on Problem Solving and Critical Thinking
