  2. Central Conditions for World-Class Research • Adequate and flexible funding with a long-term time frame • Strong scientific personalities with international “track records” and with full responsibility • Dynamic risk-taking research groups • Team spirit and common ambitions • Strong enthusiasm from all participants … constitute the bestframework for groundbreaking research results!

  3. Philosophy of DNRF: Focus on people If you let the best people grapple with the problems they are passionate about, we set the stage for real scientific breakthroughs. DNRF calls for ‘dream projects’ Next deadline : November 2013

  4. DNRF Centers of Excellence (CoE) • Research activities are ambitious, original, and internationally recognized • A strong and coherent research environment forms a physical community • Centers are headed by a leader with high international standing • Centers represent the growth layer of Danish research • Centers are attractive research training sites • Centers strengthen internationalization No fixed formula • The size of centers varies from 15 to +60 persons • The size of grants varies from 35 to 70 million DKK incl. 44 % overhead for a 6-year period

  9. Impact of DNRF grants • DNRF host 2% of total public spending on R&D • In 2006-2010 center leaders contributed to 15% of the articles and reviews in “top 10 journals” by Danish authors (affiliation at Danish institutions). In Nature and Science the contribution was 22%. • 16 % of all patent applications from public institutions in Denmark came from DNRF Centers of Excellence in 2010. • Strong international research and training environment. 34% of all PhD students and 60% of all post docs were from abroad in 2010. • 66 % Advanced Research Grants from ERC to Denmark has beenawarded to key-researchers at DNRF Centers of Excellence

  10. 88 Centers Distributed Among Scientific Fields • The DNRF has so far established 88 centers. At the moment approx. 50 centers are active. The centers are funded for up to 10 years, typically with grants totaling 50-100 million DKK.

  11. The DNRF Activities • The DNRF’s primary means to strengthen Danish research: • Other DRNF activities: Centres of Excellence (CoE) Over 80 % of funds, 88 CoE so far More than 5.5 bio. 12. CoE: People with visions Centerlederen • Har delegeret personaleansvar • Er en inspirerende, ambitiøs og visionær leder og forsker • Besidder evnen til at engagere og støtte unge forskere • Fondens primære point-of-contact til centrene
