A Kenya Free of AIDS: KeFA Building capacity at the University of Nairobi Center for HIV Prevention and Research Martina Morris, University of Washington Elizabeth Ngugi, University of Nairobi With the help of many others! IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
Overview of KeFA • Core development and support • University of Nairobi Center for HIV Prevention and Research • Infrastructure core (computing, data support, community building) • University of Washington Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology • Infrastructure core support • Project support • Training (summer ARMs, Fogarty fellowships) • 5-year pilot grants (4) + IRB capacity building • Seed grants (8) IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
Computing infrastructure: 4 Aims • AIM 1: High performance research computing • Central windows server • Research software • Secure data storage • Remote access • “Terminal services” – remote desktop clients • Web based access from anywhere on the globe • Including your office on campus… • AIM 2: Handheld electronic data collection • PDAs with GIS capability • Database management IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
Computing infrastructure: 4 AIMS • AIM 3: IRB support • Website portal • Downloadable electronic application forms • Electronic administration? • AIM 4: IT staff development • 24/7 Access to UW CSDE computing core staff • 2 week visit to UW for intensive training IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
What worked: Partnering • AIM 1: High performance research computing • UoN School of Computing and Information (SCI) • They provided secure, air conditioned space for the servers, and access to two large computer labs for our annual methods training workshop • We provided training and lab rental fees • UW CSDE • Support, training, equipment • AIM 2: Handheld data collection • UW CFAR • Provided the first 10 PDAs from a small internal grant • UW CSDE • Provided training in GIS/GIA and PDA programming IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
What worked: Partnering Dr. Carey Farquhar • AIM 3: IRB support • UW Fogarty IARTP • Joint sponsorship of 2 training fellows, and collaboration on a UoN Fogarty Bioethics proposal • AIM 3: IT staff development • UW CSDE • Tremendous support for system construction, administration and maintenance (online/skype/phone) • Intensive 2 week training course developed especially for the KeFA IT administrator Erastus Njeru Lillian Omutoko Matt Dunbar Matt Weatherford IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
Research flourished Annual “Advanced Research Methodology” Workshop 40-60 faculty/postdoctoral students each year for 2 wk intensive courses (over 150 trainees total to date) Software supported: Stata and R Stella (for epi modeling) ARC GIS Atlas ti IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
Research flourished Project 3 (Poster exhibit THPE 119) The Thika clinic was given an innovation award in adult HIV Care and Treatment by ICAP for among other things using PDAs to provide relevant information to its staff in HIV/AIDs prevention, care and treatment. Project PIs: Ann Kurth (now at NYU) Irene Inwani (UoN) IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
Research flourished Project 1 (Poster exhibit: THPE148) Onsite PDA data collection • 10 questions • 102 participants • 10 research assistants • 30 minutes Immediateonsitepresentation of results ‘‘Know your network’’ Innovative community based participatory research on sexual networks IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
Unplanned good stuff • Used equipment – quadrupled original capacity, at no additional cost • Recycled CSDE servers, eBay PDAs • Spillover to local Kenyan capacity building • Ex: National AIDS Coordinating Program (NASCOP) • The KeFAPDAs were loaned to the Kenya National AIDS Coordinating Program (NASCOP) for their annual sentinel surveillance program in September 2010. • The KeFA IT manager programmed the study instruments and provided training to the NASCOP staff on the use of the PDAs. • Ex: IMPACT Research and Development Organization IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
Unplanned challenges • University computing infrastructure • Entire system based on old, slow unreliable routers • We upgraded the campuswideUoN LAN by providing gigabit switches at 6 strategic locations throughout the system • Fiber cable cut accidentally disrupted internet access to staff offices (SoN down for over a year!) • We provided wireless access points to connect buildings • Power outages • We provided UPCs IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
Unplanned challenges • Good staff make good targets • Our Data Manager was hired away • Our Lead IT administrator was hired away • But, it’s not all bad • Beth has a permanent faculty position at Kenyatta University • Paul is working on a multi-year project with NASCOP • The UoN has now created an administrative arm for research, with a new Deputy VP for Research • The central computing system has just been handed over to them Dr. Beth Njiri Paul Macharia IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
Summary • Capacity building is possible • The research payoff is immediate • But building a center is hard • Long-term support is needed • Long enough to outlast the obstacles • Fiefdoms are hard to avoid Thank you Susan! IAS 2012 "If You Build It" session
