Science And Technology In Latin America And The Caribbean • Some Latin American countries have created significant capacity in research • An increase in the R&D investment inthe region • The # of researchers in the region grew in 33% (1994-2003) • The # of publications (SCI) saw a marked increase of 140% • Upward trend in the number ofpatent applications

  3. Economic And Social Development Several movements have appeared in the region in order to make sustained efforts to use Science and Technology to drive economic and social development What are the necessary conditions to achieve this?

Research And Technology Development An appropriate level of R&D investment requires a like correlation in the field of human resources A sustained policy to guarantee the continuity of scientific and technological activities and soften the blow of economic fluctuations We also need a better connection between scientific production and the social and economic demands of each country The strengthening of regional cooperation and the integration of efforts in science and technology is an unavoidable challenge to build sufficient critical mass in various strategic areas
