Once to Every Man and Nation Words by James Russell Lowell, alt. Music by John Zundel Words and Music public domain 538
Once to ev’ry man and nationComes the moment to decideIn the strife of truth with falsehoodFor the good or evil side
Some great causesome great decisionOff’ring each the bloom or blight
And the choice goes by forever’Twixt that darkness and that light
Then to side with truth is nobleWhen we share her wretched crustEre her cause bring fame and profitAnd ’tis prosperous to be just
Then it is the brave man choosesWhile the coward stands aside
By the light of burning martyrsChrist, Thy bleeding feet we trackToiling up new Calv’ries everWith the cross that turns not back
They must upward still and onwardWho would keep abreast of truth
Tho’ the cause of evil prosperYet the truth alone is strongTho’ her portion be the scaffoldAnd upon the throne be wrong
Yet the scaffold sways the futureAnd, behind the dim unknown
