1. Marcos8:27 - 35 27 En aquel tiempo, Jesús y sus discípulos se dirigieron a los poblados de Cesárea de Filipo. Por el camino les hizo esta pregunta: “¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?” 28 Ellos le contestaron: “Algunos dicen que eres Juan el Bautista; otros, que Elías; y otros, que alguno de los profetas”. 29 Entonces él les preguntó: “Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” Pedro le respondió: “Tú eres el Mesías”,

2. 30 Y él les ordenó que no se lo dijeran a nadie. 31 Luego se puso a explicarles que era necesario que el Hijo del hombre padeciera mucho, que fuera rechazado por los ancianos, los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas, que fuera entregado a la muerte y resucitara al tercer día. 32 Todo esto lo dijo con entera claridad. Entonces Pedro se lo llevó aparte y trataba de disuadirlo.

3. 33 Jesús se volvió, y mirando a sus discípulos, reprendió a Pedro con estas palabras: “¡Apártate de mí, Satanás! Porque tú no juzgas según Dios, sino según los hombres”. 34 Después llamó a la multitud y a sus discípulos, y les dijo: “El que quiera venir conmigo, que renuncie a sí mismo, que cargue con su cruz y que me siga. 35 Pues el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; pero el que pierda su vida por mí y por el Evangelio, la salvará”.

6. Mark8:27 - 35 27 Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 They said in reply, “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” 29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Messiah.”

7. 30 Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. 31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. 32 He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

8. 33 At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” 34 He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 35 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.”

11. Reflections on Mark 8:27 - 35 Reflexiones en Marcos 8:27 - 35 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Sept. 16, 2012 This is the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Jesus is a gift-evoker. He wants to draw out of us the gifts God our Father and the Holy Spirit have already given us. Since he is one with the Father and the Holy Spirit, he knows exactly what is going on inside of us even before we tell him. He is not satisfied with dead silence with regard to our faith in him. He wants us to express it in a loud voice. He wants us to be courageous enough to speak about it.

12. Este es el Vigésimo Cuarto Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario. Jesús quiere sacar de nosotros los dones que Dios nuestro Padre y del Espíritu Santo ya nos ha dado. Siendo que Él es uno con el Padre y el Espirito Santo, Él sabe exactamente lo que esta sucediendo dentro de nosotros hasta antes de que le digamos. Sin embargo, Él no está satisfecho con un silencio muerto acerca de nuestra fe. Él quiere que la expresemos en voz alta. Él quiere que seamos valientes lo suficiente para hablar de ello.

First, he asks his disciples what other people were saying about him. “Who do people say that I am?” When they identify him with the greatest men of their history, Jesus then wants to hear what his closest friends will say, “But who do you say that I am?” I can just see the Lord looking at them straight in the eyes, without flinching. He wants an answer. He wants to see their facial expression. He wants to see courage in their faces.

Primero, les pregunta a sus discípulos que es lo que la gente anda diciendo de Él. “¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?” Cuando lo identifican con los grandísimos hombres de su historia, Jesús entonces quiere oír lo que sus más íntimos amigos dicen. “Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” Ya puedo ver al Señor viéndolos directamente en sus ojos, sin vacilar. Él quiere una respuesta. Él quiere ver las expresiones en sus caras. Él quiere ver el valor en sus caras.

15. It is Peter who stands up and takes the leadership, he cries out: “You are the Christ!” Jesus already knew this was going to happen. However, he wanted all the apostles to hear it. And when Peter speaks up, Jesus knew Peter had the courage to lead, and to speak up for him in time of stress and strain. He knew he could build on that faith.

16. Es Pedro el que se pone de pie y toma el mando, dijo: “¡Tú eres el Cristo!” Jesús ya sabia que esto iba a suceder. Pero Él quería que todos los apóstoles lo oyeran. Y cuando Pedro habla, Jesús sabia que Pedro tenia el valor de dirigir, y de hablar por parte de Él in tiempo de estrés y la tensión . Él sabia que podía fincar sobre esa fe.

17. It is in the gospel of Matthew 16:17-36 that Jesus answers: “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth, shall be loosed in heaven.” WOW! This is how Jesus rewards faith! Always!

18. En Mateo 16:17-36 Jesús le respondió: “Bienaventurado eres, Simón, hijo de Jonás, porque no te lo reveló carne ni sangre, sino mi Padre que está en los cielos. Y yo también; te digo, que tú eres Pedro, y sobre esta roca edificare mi iglesia; y las puertas del infierno no prevalecerán contra ella. Y a ti te daré las llaves del reino de los cielos; y todo lo que atares en la tierra será atado en los cielos; y todo lo que desatares en la tierra será desatado en los cielos.” ¡WOW! ¡ Así es como Jesús premia la fe! ¡Todo el tiempo!

19. For the time being, this was a big secret (Cf. Mark 4:11-12). Jesus knew others were not ready for this message. “They would indeed see, but not perceive. They would hear, but not understand.” Indeed, they would turn against Jesus, torture and crucify him.

20. Por lo pronto, esto es un gran secreto (Marcos 4:11-12). Jesús sabia que había otros que no estaban listos para recibir este mensaje. “Viendo, no perciben, y oyendo, no entienden.” En verdad, ellos se voltearían contra Jesús, lo torturarían, y lo crucificarían.

21. Jesus tried to prepare us to share in the suffering that comes with following him. “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.”

22. Jesús trata de prepararnos para compartir en el sufrir que viene por razón de seguirlo. “Porque todo el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; y todo el que pierda su vida por causa de mí, y del evangelio, la salvara.”

23. And in Matthew 5:11-12 Jesus said: “Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.” So right away, this takes a serious turn.

24. Y en Mateo 5:11-12 dice: “Dichosos ustedes, cuando la gente los insulte y los maltrate, y cuando por causa mía los ataquen con toda clase de mentiras. Alégrense, estén contentos, porque van a recibir un gran premio en el cielo; pues así también persiguieron a los profetas que vivieron antes que ustedes.” Entonces inmediatamente todo se pone algo serio.

25. Those who remembered Isaiah 50:5-9 (the first reading of the Mass today), will see this as fulfillment of prophecy. It speaks in the Spirit of God, It is called the Third Servant Song because it says that God will lead his servant safely through the darkness of the rejection of the people who had no faith.

26. Aquellos que recuerdan a Isaías 50:5-9 (la primera lectura de la Misa de hoy), verán en esto el cumplimiento de profecía. Habla en el Espirito de Dios. Se llama el Tercer Canto del Siervo, porque dice que Dios va a dirigir a su Siervo seguramente por medio de la oscuridad del rechazo de la gente que le faltaba fe.

27. As in the Passion of Christ, Isaiah foretold they would “beat, buffet, and spit upon him.” And yet, he would not shield himself, nor would he run away like a coward. He would set his face like flint, knowing he would not be put to shame.

28. Como en la Pasión de Cristo, Isaías dijo antemano que iban a “golpear, bofetear, y escupir sobre Él” sin embargo, Él no se iba a protegerse, ni iba a salir corriendo como un cobarde. Pondría su rostro como un pedernal, sabiendo que no iba a ser avergonzado.

29. These are strong words in the ears of anybody who is uncommitted. The uncommitted person may think he/she is playing it very smart by remaining “neutral” ( i.e., neither here nor there). He may want to keep others guessing as to what his commitment is. But in reality, it manifests a character fault. It could be fear and timidity at the face of opposition. It could be cowardice. It could be laziness. It could be slowness. Who knows? God, God knows, right? As we live, so shall we die!

30. Estas palabras son fuertes en los oídos de cualquiera que no este entregado. El nó entregado quizá piensa que la esta jugando muy vivo, permaneciendo en “neutral” (es decir, ni aquí, ni allá). Quizá quiera que otros se queden adivinando a lo que él este entregado. Pero en realidad, manifiesta una falta de carácter. Puede ser miedo o timidez al ver la oposición. Puede ser cobardía. Puede ser pereza . Puede ser que es despacioso. ¿Quién sabrá? Solo Dios, ¿verdad? Pero así como vivimos, así moriremos.

31. Let us pray that God may find us ready and alert, diligent to do his will, no matter what. Let us pray for courage and strength in times of trial and stress. Let us pray the courage to act out our convictions. St. Peter, pray for us!

32. Pidámosle a Dios que cuando Él venga nos encuentre preparados y alertas, diligentes y listos para cumplir su voluntad, pase lo que pase. Oremos por valor y fortaleza en tiempo de prueba y estrés. Oremos para el valor de actuar según nuestras convicciones. San Pedro, ¡Ruega por nosotros!

33. There comes a time for you and me to profess our faith. Don’t look away. Don’t put it off for another day. Don’t procrastinate. Make up your mind to follow Jesus. Stand up and be counted! Who is Jesus for you? What do you say? Llega el tiempo para que tu y yo profesemos nuestra fe. No mires hacia un lado. No hay que procrastinar. Decídete a seguir a Cristo. Hay que decir le a Jesús: ¡cuenta conmigo! ¿Quien es Jesús para ti? ¿Que dices?
