Americium History and Other Facts • Origin: The element is named after America. • Description: A man-made radioactive metal, a few grams of which are produced from plutonium in nuclear reactors each year. • Found: Americium is available to qualified users in the UK and in the USA. • Discovered by: G.T. Seaborg in 1945 • Tarnishes slowly in dry air at room temperature. • Am has been used as a portable source for gamma radiography.
