  2. Issues & Problems Culture is being inserted into education rather than education being inserted into culture. Students are not encouraged or given ample opportunities to develop cultural competency Culturally relevant material is used to make students feel good instead of meeting their cultural competency and self-efficacy needs.

  3. The Underlying Problem In what ways might teachers, with the support of the whole school, encourage students to develop a cultural competence that allows them to achieve self-efficacy?

  4. Turning Points #4: Organize & build relationships for learning and growth #6: Create a safe and healthy learning environment #7: Involve parents and community to support learning and development

  5. Some Solutions… As a teacher, it’s crucial to “self-assess” your cultural biases. Discuss issues with multiple perspectives. “Hilliard’s work is an example of how academic achievement and cultural competence can be merged” Billings (2001).

  6. Our Top Solution Discuss academic topics and everyday situations with multiple perspectives. Students and teachers will engage in positive and unbiased discussions that are based on research, information, and personal experiences from the students. This helps to create a safe and healthy environment and further develop the learning environment.

  7. Advantages Disadvantages • Cost friendly • Individual teachers do not need support of school to implement in the classroom. • Teachers are directly interacting with students and can evaluate thoroughly. • Does not directly reach the parents • Results heavily rest on students’ level of participation
