Bush • Americans With Disabilities Act, 1990 • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, (IDEA) 2004 • TRIO Program – Federally funded College Opportunity Program to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree.

The Individual Education Plan (IEP) • The cornerstone of Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) for each child with a disability is an Individual Education Plan (IEP). • The IEP specifies the student’s disability (or disabilities) and will focus only on the areas affected by the disability (or disabilities). • The IEP specifies what will be the required support for a student to reach academic goal(s)

WHAT IS • First national college program to address serious barriers to education. • Administered, funded, and implemented by the US Dept of Education. • Includes eight programs targeted to assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs. • TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects. 

  6. EXAMPLES: TRIO PROGRAM Academic Tutoring Personal Counseling Mentoring Financial Guidance, and Direct Support Services for Students Relevant Training for Directors and Staff Other Supports necessary for educational access and retention.

Registration Assistance,Test Proctoring, Sign Language Interpreting, Personal Development Classes, Community Agency Referrals, Classroom Aide, Disability Management Counseling, LD Eligibility Assessment, Mobility Orientation, Note Taking, Priority Registration, Readers (limited), Speech to Text Services, Orientation, Student Clubs, tutoring (limited), Job Placement services for students with disabilities, Adaptive Computer Devices, AlphaSmart notetaking keyboard, Assistive Computer Software, Voice Recognition and Screen Readers, Computer Assisted Learning, Brailler (loan), Closed Circuit TV, Assistive Listening Device,Print Magnifier, Tape Recorders/Players (loan), TTY Voice Amplified Phones, Wheelchair Loan, High Tech Center, Other services available based on individual need

Help students visually organize and outline ideas to structure writing and improve communication and expression.

  19. IT IS UP TO YOU, THE STUDENT Having an impairment or a learning difficulty does not have to limit options. Students need to choose the courses and institutions that are right for them! Disability Support Services Programs offer the support and services disabled students will need to achieve their academic goals. How well a student can expect to do is up to the student!
