  1. Most Famous Architect • He was from Italy • Empress Elizabeth chose him to construct it • No Russian was educated enough to build a structure like the Winter Palace • Took 8 long years to build it Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli

  2. Why? Part I • Some say the original purpose of the palace was for the Empress Elisabeth • (daughter of Peter the Great) • Died before it was finished

  3. Why?Part II • Others would say that it was constructed as a symbol of Russia’s rising power • A more European style would grant Russia greatness

  4. Exterior Feature I • The figure of an angel on top symbolizes the peace that settled on Europe after the victory over Napoleon. • In the middle of the Palace Square is the Alexander Column made in 1830-1834 after a design by AugusteMontferrand. Both the Column and the General Staff Arch commemorate the Russian victory over Napoleon in the 1812-1814 war.

  5. Pavilion Hall Gardens • The exterior parts of the palace constantly changed like the type of plants and the decorations according to the fashion trends • The first winter gardens to exist in 18th century • Most favorite tourist attractions

  6. Statues • Represented the Russian Culture and their power • Statues were found in and outside of the Winter Palace

The Jordan Staircase Before known as the “Ambassadorial Staircase” because important people from other countries were the one that walked it The name was then changed as the “Jordan Staircase because of a religious day known as the Epiphany day in which took place at the staircase. It was a procession that lead to the Neva River

  9. The White Hall In 1841, The White Hall was designed for the future wedding of Alexander II The center of the room are figures of Roman gods The Paintings in the room were painted to match the perfect harmony in the room.

  10. The Grand Ball Room The ballroom has many mirrors and many parts covered in gold The gold was meant to make the room lighter.

  11. Bloody Sunday • The "Bloody Sunday" massacre. The revolutionary soldiers and sailors marched to the Winter Palace on an autumn night in 1917. • The “imperial forces” killed and hurt the protesting workers. • The snow was soaked with blood. Since then, the cobblestone has been preserved on the square to keep as a reminder of the historic event.

  12. Word War I • Some of the rooms in the Winter Palace was turned into hospital rooms for the wounded • This was during Anastasia’s time
