Unconformity

Unconformity. Break in the geologic record created when rock layers are removed by erosion. Evidenced by: Erosion Time gap Distortion of strata (folding and/or faulting) Igneous intrusions or lava flows (dikes, sills, and laccoliths). Igneous Rock. Nonconformity.

  1. Unconformity • Break in the geologic record created when rock layers are removed by erosion. • Evidenced by: • Erosion • Time gap • Distortion of strata (folding and/or faulting) • Igneous intrusions or lava flows (dikes, sills, and laccoliths)

  2. Igneous Rock Nonconformity • Unconformity in which strata of sedimentary rock rests on igneous or metamorphic rock layers.

  3. Angular Unconformity • Boundary between horizontal and distorted (tilted or folded) strata. • Deposition Distortion Deposition

  4. Sedimentation Deformation Erosion Renewed Sedimentation Angular Unconformity • An angular unconformity marks a significant time gap in the geological column.

  5. Disconformity • Boundary between layers of rock that have not been deposited continuously.
