    23. Tips for those interested in surgery/urology

    24. Tip #1 Urology is a competitive specialty so you need to know that you want to do it as early as possible. (Ideally by May of your first year)

    25. Tip #2 Until you complete your training, your personal life will always come second to medicine. Only consider urology if you can and will work 70-80 hours a week for the next 6-9 years.

    26. Tip #3 Urology is not just for men. Female patients and residents are common. Women should be ready to discuss intimate male topics and be able to appreciate humor surrounding these topics.

    27. Tip #4 You need to study very hard to succeed in urology—surgeons are not just technicians. In addition to your attitude and work ethic, you will be judged on how smart you are and how much you know.

    28. Tip #5 Study until 25, investigate until 40, profession until 60, at which age I would have him retired on a double allowance. William Osler

    29. Tip #5 Urology is an academic field—you need to understand evidence-based medicine and do some research early in your career.

    30. Something so important they write books about it

    31. But the winner is… The key to success is mentorship from your seniors. (I mainly mean staff physicians, followed by residents, but I would be happy to start.)

    32. Mentorship

    33. Mentorship NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE First author (did all the work, gets the credit) Many other authors Last author. First author wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to do this without last (supervising) author.
