According to the United Nations 200 million people lived outside their home country in 2010.
Context of the study • In order learn more about expatriates and their experience, Berlitz, in association with BVA survey institute, began a study on expatriates in 2009. • Aimed at expatriates and their spouses due to depart. • The goal of the 2009 Study was to answer the following: • What is the typical profile of future expatriates? • What is their assessment of previous experiences abroad? • What expectations do they have concerning their next experience abroad? • How do the spouses of expatriates view this experience?
Goals of the study In 2010, the study was expanded to include: • Individuals preparing to depart • Current expatriates already living abroad • Repatriated assignees • The questionnaire was offered in 5 languages. • The goals of the 2010 Study are to learn: • The typical profile of expatriates and their spouses • Expatriates’ reason for going abroad • How the expatriation experience was perceived • Expatriates’ needs and expectations before, during, and after their experience abroad • The role of the company in the expatriation process • To accomplish this, three complementary questionnaires were created to closely track the expatriates’ experiences.

A profile of mostly young males <40 yrs: 70% > 41 yrs: 30%
Expatriates typically have advanced degrees • What is the highest degree you have earned? 72% of expatriates have completed at least 5 years of university.
Expatriates exposure to foreign countries • Have you or do you have ……?
Widespread enthusiasm before leaving • How high would you rate your enthusiasm/optimism concerning…? (score between 0 and 10) • Despite somewhat tempered enthusiasm from expatriates currently abroad, enthusiasm is widespread regardless of how the experience is evaluated.
A personal and professional opportunity • For you, this experience… Expatriation is seen immediately as a personal and professional opportunity, even if the latter has a tendency to diminish during the experience abroad.
Level of enthusiasm • How high would you rate your enthusiasm/optimism ?
Expatriates are not disillusioned by the reality of living abroad • Would you say that your degree of optimism has changed since your arrival in this country? During the experience abroad, optimism remains stable – or increases slightly from a personal, professional, or family standpoint.

The desire to repeat the experience At the conclusion of your time abroad, did you want to… ? If you had the chance today would you repeat your expatriation? Expatriates back from abroad overwhelmingly wish to relive a similar experience, either immediately (65% of them) or at a later time (90%).

Difficulties upon one’s return • Upon returning from abroad, did you experience difficulties... Half of all repatriates experience difficulties in the workplace upon return.

Significant professional changes upon one’s return 1/3 of expatriates back from abroad have changed employers based on the position that was offered to them upon their return.
Conclusions: • How can we attract a more diverse group of expatriates? • Why are such important roles filled by the youngest members of the organization? • How can we keep the spouses/partners equally enthusiastic throughout the assignment and with a higher desire to repeat the expatriate experience? • What do we need to do to retain our expats once they return home? • How can we ease the transition back to the home office?
