The looms had come from Springfield; our yarns from Birmingham. The textiles manufactured herewere sold around the world. Two hundred of my neighborsworked here night and day. Generations worked the loomsand served Manchester Mill.
In nineteen hundred fortythe mill sold shares of stock. They squeezed us for more profit, then more, — and more again! They added to our hours, but never to our pay. Slaves to unseen owners, we began to fade away.
Bit by bit the stillness grewuntil one loom remained; and I the only person leftwho knew enough to run it.
And now I live inside the shellof what the mill once was. Dodging sour puddles— chewing scraps of rancid food. Ptoo!
