Organization design The determination of organizational structure that is most appropriate for the strategy, people, technology and task of the organization.
Four Building Blocks Division of Work- Divide the total workload into tasks that can be logically and comfortably be performed. Departmentalization- Combine tasks in a logical and efficient manner. Hierarchy- Specify who reports to whom. Co-ordination- Set up mechanism for integrating departmental activities.
Hierarchy A pattern of multiple levels of an organizational structure, at the top of which is the senior ranking manager, responsible for the operation of the entire organization, other lower ranking managers are located down the various levels of the organization.
Span of Control Span of Control is the number of people/ subordinates that can be effectively managed by one manager. A wide span of control exists when a person oversees many subordinates. A narrow span of control exists when a leader oversees few subordinates.
The optimal Span of Control is dependent upon a great number of factors, some of which include: The nature of the work of the subordinates. The skills, capabilities, experience, qualifications of the subordinates. The skills, capabilities, experience, qualifications of the manager. The use of information technology. The detail at which work rules and procedures have been formalized and are known by the subordinates.
Formal and Informal Organization Formal organization pertains to the intentional structure of roles in a formally organized enterprise The informal organization is a network of interpersonal relationships that arise when people associate with each other
