Shylock • Typically Jewish in that he is a moneylender. • His daughter is unhappy with him and his faith – this would have tied in with the view of Jews that many of the audience would have had. • However, he is shown to be persecuted for his faith. • Negative portrayal of Antonio in his dealings with Shylock – criticism of Christians implicitly.
